Seward is located on Resurrection Bay, 127 miles south of Anchorage. The city was named for William H. Seward, U.S. Secretary of State under president Andrew Johnson, who helped with the purchase of Alaska from Russia in 1867. Seward is the southern terminus of the Alaska Railroad. It is also the Gateway to Kenai Fjords National Park. See sea otters, porpoises, whales and glaciers by private tour or charter boats departing from Seward's Small Boat Harbor. Alaska SeaLife Center also gives you a good look at Alaska's marine wildlife. Charter a boat for fishing, go kayaking in Resurrection Bay, or try dog sledding at Seave's Ididaride. Visit Exit Glacier Nature Center, which is just a 12 mile drive from Seward. Dall sheep are commonly sighted along the Seward Highway between Anchorage and Girdwood. If you are visiting near the fourth of July, don't miss the Mount Marathon Race.
Some facilities at Seward include cafes, restaurants (many featuring Alaskan seafood), supermarkets, gift shops, gas stations, and laundromats.
